An American man and his teenage son died last month after being swarmed by wasps while ziplining at an adventure camp in Laos. Dan Owen, the director of an international school in neighboring Vietnam, and his son Cooper were attacked by the insects on October 15 at Green Jungle Park, located outside the city of Luang Prabang—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular tourist destination.

According to hospital officials, the incident occurred as Owen and Cooper were descending from a tree at the end of the zip line. Both were stung many dozens of times. They were first taken to a local clinic and then transported to Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital, arriving in critical condition.

Jorvue Yianouchongteng, the emergency room physician who received them, told The Associated Press: “The son was unconscious and passed away after half an hour, while the father was conscious and passed away about three hours later. We tried our best to save them but we couldn't.

"No further details about the guide’s condition or the ongoing investigation have been released at this time.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Owen family and all those affected by this tragedy. This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder to always be aware of your surroundings, especially in nature. Insects such as wasps can be deadly, and it’s important to take precautions when participating in outdoor activities.

May the family find comfort and strength during this difficult time.
